Zamboanga City seeks food security measures amid high inflation
The city government of Zamboanga has been pushing for alternative measures to ensure food security amid the rising inflation, Mayor Beng Climaco said.
The local chief executive said that as alternatives, the city supports organic farming and livestock dispersal to maximize food production like chicken and eggs.
“These are alternatives that we need to work on as prices of different basic commodities are increasing,” she said.
But Climaco lamented that despite the Department of Agriculture’s intervention to address increasing prices of rice, there are still barangays like Manalipa, Curuan and Patalon where rice prices remain high.
The National Food Authority (NFA) had unloaded thousands sacks of rice previously after the local government declared a state of calamity late August due to the sudden jump in the prices of rice, which reached to P70 per kilo.
According to the Philippine Statitics Authority (PSA), inflation hit 6.7 percent in September, highest in nine years, due to rising prices of food and non-alcoholic drinks. #
