Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco led Tuesday, August 13, officials of the 98 city barangays in a pledge to fight dengue, a deadly mosquito-borne disease, which has claimed 24 lives mostly children as of last week, the local government said.
The mayor dared the barangay officials to do what have to be done to fight dengue in their respective villages, foremost of which is to search the breeding ground of dengue-carrier mosquitos and destroy them with the use of salt, used oil and fumigation and other measures.
She underscored the need to implement the 4S against dengue – search and destroy, self-protection, seek early consultation, and say no to indiscriminate fumigation.
In the pledge, the mayor directed the barangay officials to implement all laws and presidential orders to keep the barangays clean and orderly.
Earlier the local government declared a state of calamity in the city.
With that and the Department of Health’s dengue epidemic declaration nationwide, the barangays are authorized to spend their respective calamity funds to fight dengue, subject to the usual budgeting and accounting procedures. #
