‘Wag matakot! Zamboanga City treasurer willing to allow watchers for official ballots kept in her office

Zamboanga City Treasurer Romelita Candido has assuaged fears that the official ballots for the May 13 elections might be tampered with while in her custody.

Candido said she would be willing to allow watchers of anybody to watch over the official ballots during office hours.

“Watchers will be the first persons to enter my office and the last to leave, to ensure nobody is left inside by night,” the city treasurer said.

The official ballots and other election paraphernalia arrived Thursday in Zamboanga City.

Candido, however, said the vote counting machines (VCMs) were not in her office and only the Commission on Elections (Comelec) knows where they are being kept. But she indicated that these could be stored in the courier’s warehouse.

“We are waiting for the arrival of the Election Returns (ERs),” she added.

Once the ERs arrive, verification would be conducted in the presence of representatives from different political parties and media outfits, the official said.

Under the Omnibus Election Code, the Treasurer’s Office in the city, provincial and municipal levels are the custodians of election materials and other paraphernalia.
