Various stakeholders, including the police, Commission on Elections (Comelec), and local candidates, have spearheaded a “Unity Walk” and signing of a covenant for peaceful and clean midterm polls in May in Soccsksargen Sunday, January 13.
Police Regional Office (PRO) 12 led by Director Chief Supt. Eliseo Tam Rasco said that the event started with a “Unity Walk” at the General Santos City Oval Freedom Park, followed by a “Peace Rally” inside Gensan Police Office in Camp Fermin G. Lira.
There was also an interfaith prayer and releasing of a white dove as a unique expression of peace, love and gratitude, it said.
Comelec XII Regional Election Director Atty. Michael C. Abas expressed gratefulness to the community of Soccsksargen for the support in the event.
“Today, we have shown the whole nation our unity in the midst of our differences, unity towards peace, unity for clean and orderly elections, unity towards a strong society,” he said.
He also said that the event also showed that the people in Region 12 dispelled violence and disturbances in the election.
“To our candidates, may it be your vow to be fair and peaceful in our election, may you take it seriously that the right to vote is sacred,” he said as quoted by PRO 12.
Comelec General Santos City Election Officer Atty April N. Mitchor-Miguel led the Integrity Pledge affirmation, which bound to commit all political candidates to abide by the tenets of the Philippine Constitution, election laws, rules and regulation, respect for the sanctity of the electoral exercise, and among others that pertains to orderly, honest, peaceful, and credible elections.
