Sick joke: Leila de Lima gives a mouthful martial law-loving Shernee Abubakar Tan
Senator Leila de Lima on Sunday gave a Sulu congresswoman a mouthful for proposing to expand President Duterte’s martial law to cover the entire country.
“Real people’s lives and well-being are on the balance. Don’t play games with people’s lives. Don’t play with the power of declaring and extending martial law. It is a fire that will burn us all if recklessly handled by those supposedly elected to protect us from abuse,” De Lima said in a statement.
Kusug Tausug Party-list Rep. Shernee Abubakar Tan brought the house down during the joint session Saturday when she matter-of-factly suggested to expand not only the timeframe but the scope of martial law.
“I find it very disturbing to say the least. Was it meant to be a joke? Meant to earn cheap laughter from those inclined to laugh at the situation? If so, what an offensive bad and sick joke it was,” said Lima.
“Was it to be an insult to the gravity and outcome of yesterday’s exercise? A way to earn brownie points from Malacanang? If so, what a deplorably blatant and shameless way to feather one’s own interest,” she added.
De Lima said that Tan probably has no idea on the horrors of martial law or has no mpathy with former Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino III and former Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Chair Etta Rosales who suffered during the dark days of martial law under the Marcos regime.
De Lima said the congresswoman should be made to understand that martial law was an extreme measure that is not to be taken lightly and not meant to be taken as a first resort.
“It is not some cheap thrill-seeking ride. It has untold ramifications, especially if key institutions will allow vague delineations and effectively unbridled exercise thereof,” she said.
