Sandiganbayan OKs Floirendo’s overseas trip for checkup


Davao Del Norte Representative Antonio Floirendo Jr. has been allowed by the Sandiganbayan 6th Division to leave the country to undergo medical check-up.

The anti-graft court has issued a resolution permitting Floirendo to travel to Singapore and Thailand from August 22 to 28.

Floirendo had informed the court that he will be first going to Singapore for a check-up at the Cheng Jun Gastroenterology & Medical Clinic

After which, he will be in Bangkok, Thailand on the August 25 for another medical check-up at TICEBA GmbH and Miskawaan Health Group.

Floirendo explained the trips are meant as medical review of the results of his medical trip to Germany where he attention for his history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and injuries sustained on his posterior 3rd and 4th ribs from his helicopter crash incident.

He is facing a graft case concerning the alleged anomalous land lease deal between his family’s Tagum Agricultural Development Corporation (TADECO) and the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

Under the case, Floirendo is accused of having “a direct financial or pecuniary interest” in the 2003 deal which allowed TADECO to lease from the BuCor a 5,000-hectare land at the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DAPECOL) in Davao del Norte as a banana plantation.

When the 2003 JVA was reached, Floirendo was still representative of the 2nd District of Davao del Norte.

The Office of the Ombudsman which filed the case pointed out the Constitution prohibits a lawmaker to intervene in any government contracts before any agency for his pecuniary benefit during his term of office.
