Sandiganbayan allows Floirendo to travel to Germany

Davao del Norte Representative Antonio Floirendo Jr. has been allowed by the Sandiganbayan 6th Division to go to Germany to seek medical treatment.

The anti-graft court has issued a resolution which granted his motion to travel to Germany from June 23 to July 13.

In his motion, Floirendo informed the court he has to undergo medical procedure to address his history of cough and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at the Ticeba Facilities in Heidelburg, Germany.

“The report shows accused-movant had a history of COPD and cough for three days,” he cited in his motion.

“The radiology report also shows the prior injuries of accused-movant on his posterior 3rd and 4th ribs — this is from accused movant’s helicopter crash incident,” he added.

Floirendo is facing a graft case before the Sandiganbayan which stemmed from the complaint filed by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez over the land lease deal between the Tagum Agricultural Development Corporation (TADECO) and the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

Under the case, Floirendo is accused of having “a direct financial or pecuniary interest” in the deal under a multi-million peso 2003 joint venture agreement (JVA) which allowed TADECO to lease from the BuCor a 5,000-hectare land at the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DAPECOL) in Davao del Norte as a banana plantation.

Alvarez said the Constitution prohibits a lawmaker to intervene in any government contracts before any agency for his pecuniary benefit during his term of office.

The Speaker alleged TADECO has as its major stockholder Floirendo’s family and Anflo Management and Investment Corporation (ANFLOCOR) which also has large shares from the same family.

He indicated that when the 2003 JVA was reached Floirendo was still representative of the 2nd District of Davao del Norte.
