A suspected communist rebel was killed and two soldiers were wounded in a clash in Bukidnon, military said.
Government troops from the 1st Special Forces Battalion (SFB) conducted a security patrol Tuesday, October 9, near Barangay New Eden in Pangantucan town following reports of the local residents about the presence of armed men who were allegedly involved in extortion, intimidation and forced recruitment, said Lt. Col. Sergio P. Macarandan, commanding officer of the 1st SFB.
A 30-minute firefight ensued between the patrolling government forces and some 10 members of the New People’s Army (NPA).
Aside from the death of a rebel, the soldiers also recovered from the area one M16 rifle with M203 grenade launcher attached, one M16 rifle, one M14 rifle, one barrel of M60 machine gun, eight anti-personnel mines, one hand grenade, and assorted live ammunition.
The two soldiers who were wounded in the incident were brought to a military hospital in Camp Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro City, and are now in stable condition, Macarandan said.
