The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has directed the telecommunications firms operating in Zamboanga City to cut off all network services during the major activities of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2018 this month.
The removal of the signal of the different networks was apparently to ensure that there would be no untoward incident, such as bombing, would take place during the holding of the activities.
In a memorandum, NTC Commissioner Gamaliel A. Cordova said Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco requested the temporary cutting off of the signal of ABS-CBN Convergence, Inc; Smart Communications, Inc.; Globe Telecom, Inc.; and Digitel Mobile Philippines, Inc.
The major activities when the network services would be removed are the following: Opening Salvo on Oct. 1 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Street Dance Competition on Oct. 11 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; Parade of Lights (Float Competition) and UZ Grand Parade on Oct. 11 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Grand Procession on Oct. 12 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
“There shall be no signal, direct and/or reflected, coming from any cell site (base stations) within two (2) kilometer radius from the center of the event venue,” Cordova said.
The city government has lined up activities for its Zamboanga Hermosa 2018, which started as early as September 29 leading to October 12, the feast day of Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar, the city’s patroness.
The local government has reminded the Zamboangueños that October 12 is a special non-working holiday in the city pursuant to Republic Act No. 7350.
