The city government of General Santos City has conducted a public awareness campaign, particularly among the youths, about human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS).
With the theme “Reflecting on our past, preparing for our future,” the Regional HIV/AIDS Summit was held on October 17-18 and was participated by students from different schools in Gensan including Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members. Personnel from different hospitals in the city also took part in the activity.
Dr. Mely Lastimoso, coordinator of the City Health Office’s Social Hygiene Clinic (SHC), underscored the importance of being knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS, especially among the young ones.
“Pinaka-goal natin is among young people because as of today they are the ones who are most vulnerable when it comes to HIV/AIDS. It is time to talk to them in formal set up kung ano ang gusto nilang malaman, ano ang hindi familiar sa kanila, ano ang alam nila para mabigyan natin ng tamang kaalaman tungkol sa HIV/AIDS kasi kahit HIV positive, you can live a normal life as long as tama ang ginagawa,” she said.
The event also aims to encourage everyone not to be ashamed to undergo HIV testing as they offer free consultation and free HIV testing.
