Ousted House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez admitted Tuesday that he is still interested in the speakership.
Alvarez made the statement as he appeared to have won in the congressional race in the first district of Davao del Norte. This was despite the strong opposition against him by presidential daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
In an interview with reporters, Alvarez said he would “tell a lie” if he would say that he has no plan to seek again the speakership following his fresh mandate.
Duterte-Carpio reportedly maneuvered Alvarez’s ouster as speaker last year. The Davao del Norte congressman was replaced by former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
When the 18th Congress opens in July, the newly elected congressmen are expected to nominate a new Speaker and other congressional leaders.
