NTC OKs police request to shut down mobile phone signals during ‘Sinulog’ festivities

With the annual “Sinulog” Festival about to go in high gear this January 15, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has granted the request of Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 to shut down cell sites of mobile phone companies during the Fiesta Señor activities.

The shutdown is to prevent terrorist bomb attacks during the festivities, Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak said.

The politiko, who is the city’s deputy mayor for police matters, said NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba signed the approval of the request.

Tumulak said the shutdown of cell sites will take effect for two days.

Tumulak said there will be no mobile phone signal during the solemn procession on Saturday, January 14, and the Sinulog Grand Parade on January 15.

He refused to disclose the exact time when signals will be jammed and the particular areas that will be affected for security reasons.

Earlier, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmena said he sees the bombing of the fiesta in Hilongos, Leyte, which left at least 32 persons injured, as the “biggest threat” to the “Sinulog” Festival.
