An alleged member of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) was killed while a soldier was wounded in a military raid in Misamis Oriental.
Lt. Col. Roy Anthony O. Derilo, commander of 58th Infantry Battalion (IB), said the government troops also seized six high-powered firearms during the raid in an uninhabited hinter area of Mt. Obulan in Claveria town Tuesday, December 10.
During the raid, the Army troopers encountered 15 NPA rebels and the firefight lasted for about 15 minutes after which the enemies scampered towards different directions.
The clash resulted in the death of one rebel identified as Benjie Tandayon, alias Jay-r, and the recovery of two M653 rifles, one M16A1 rifle, one AK-47 assault rifle, one M1 Garrand rifle, one cal .22 rifle, subversive documents with high intelligence value and other personal belongings, Derilo said.
A soldier who was wounded on his right arm refused to be evacuated after application of first aid, he said.
The raid was conducted following complaints from poor farmers about the presence of the rebels who were threatening their livelihood, the official added.
