Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for his “non interference” in choosing Davao City as the next year’s host of the Palarong Pambansa.
Davao City bested Zamboanga province, Misamis Occidental, and General Santos City in the bidding to host the national games in 2019.
“Most of all, we thank you (Duterte) for this, especially your non-interference in the very complicated and technically difficult decision to choose the next site of the Palarong Pambansa, which is Davao City. Thank you for not being part of the process,” Briones said in a speech during the opening of the Palarong Pambansa in Ilocos Sur Sunday, April 15.
The President came from Davao City and his daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio, is the current mayor of the city.
Some 10,000 student athletes and sports officials from 17 regions have been participating in the weeklong national games, with the theme, “Championing the Spirit of Young Filipino Athletes.”
