The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has endorsed the P9.87-billion expansion of the Zamboanga International Airport (ZIA) to Malacañang.
This was bared by Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco-Salazar in a SunStar Online report Tuesday, August 8.
The expansion entails the transfer of ZIA to the villages of Mercedes and Talabaan in the city’s east coast from its current location in Baliwasan.
According to the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDa), the Baliwasan site is no longer viable for future expansions. This means that for the airport expansion to take place, the facility must first be transferred.
The same report said the ZIA transfer was first pitched in 1996 as part of Zamboanga City’s Master Development Plan.
Once finished, the new and improved ZIA is expected to accelerate economic growth in the region. #
