The government troops have foiled a bomb attack in Basilan province following an encounter with about 15 members of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group.
Brig. Gen. Fernando Reyeg, commander of the Joint Task Force Basilan, said the firefight between the troops of the Alpha Company of the 68th Infantry Battalion and the bandits took place in Barangay Calang Canas in Maluso at the wee hours Tuesday, October 15.
“The troops were acting on a report received from a reliable source regarding the plan of Furuji Indama’s group to create havoc in our area of operation,” he said.
Heavy firefight ensued that lasted for about 30 minutes after which the enemies withdrew bringing along their casualties with them.
While scouring the encounter site, Reyeg said operating troops together with K9 personnel recovered six improvised explosive devices about to be laid along the Basilan Circumferential Road.
He said there were also blood stains in the area.
“We are grateful for we incurred no casualty during the operation and we were able to secure the IEDs and foil the bomb plot of the enemies,” said Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom). #
