Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has urged the communities in the city to observe proper solid waste management as over 3,000 sacks of garbage were collected from coastal areas for the month of May.
The Bantay Dagat volunteers retrieved the garbage, mostly plastic, bottles, wrappers, tires, sacks and rubber slippers in 32 coastal communities of Davao, said Paul Bermejo, officer-in-charge of the Ancillary Services Unit.
Huge volume of wastes collected came from Barangay 23-C, he said.
Duterte-Carpio also asked the residents to join in the clean up drives.
“These (pile of) garbage that we have collected were the effect of the heavy rains and flooding (that hit) the city center. Wastes are being washed into the coastal areas,” Bermejo said.
Currently, there are 300 Bantay Dagat volunteers, who continue to conduct simultaneous clearing operations all over the 32 coastal areas. They conduct clearing operations every Saturday.
