Mayor Sara: Don’t discriminate, assault health workers

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has warned of arresting individuals who would discriminate and assault healthcare workers in the wake of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis.

The local chief executive issued the warning after reports that a health worker was doused with water, while others were called “virus.”

“Duna gyu’y mga ing-ana…watch out lang kay kung madakpan mo sa pulis, and ubay-ubay na baya gyud pud ang nadakpan sa pulis ‘no, ug kanang lain-lain na violations nato (There are really people like that. You watch out because the police will arrest you. There are many people already arrested by police for sorts of violations),” she said.

Duterte-Carpio said that there were already individuals arrested for violating the liquor ban, curfew, and assaulting authorities at the checkpoints.

The mayor reminded the public that healthcare workers – doctors, nurses, medical technicians, nursing aides and even security guards – must be treated with utmost respect because they are the ones helping contain the spread of COVID-19.

All those who are working in the hospitals are the very people protecting the public right now, she added.

She stressed that without the medical frontliners no one will prevent the disease from spreading and everyone will be jeopardized. #
