Mayor Rivera graces kick-off ceremony for 25th anniversary of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape

General Santos City Mayor Ronnel C. Rivera has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the Recreational Waters Monitoring (Beachwatch) Program.

This as Rivera joined the DENR and other local government officials in the kick-off celebration Monday, March 1, of the 25th anniversary of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) with the theme “Protected by the People for the People.”

Aside from the signing of the MOA, the highlight of the 5-day celebration was the Exhibit and Art display at the lobby of the City Hall.

On display was the information of the marine resources in Sarangani Bay and General Santos Coastal Waters.

In 1996, former President Fidel V. Ramos issued Presidential Proclamation No. 756, designating the Sarangani Bay and waters of the municipalities of Maitum, Kiamba and Maasim in Sarangani as protected seascape.

The SBPS covers 210,887.69 hectares of 68 coastal barangays in Maitum, Kiamba, Maasim, Alabel, Malapatan, Glan, and Gensan.
