Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco has hailed the police authorities and other concerned government agencies after intercepting motorized boats loaded with alleged smuggled cigarettes off the waters of Sta. Cruz Island.
The contraband with an estimated value of P4.375 million was discovered Thursday, November 11, when personnel from the 2nd ZC Mobile Force Company “Seaborne” together with their counterparts from the Bureau of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) and Enforcement and Security Service (ESS) were conducting seaborne patrol.
The crew members of both watercraft failed to present necessary documents.
One junkong, local name for the motorized boat, with four crew members was transporting 80 cases of assorted cigarettes while the other unit with four crew members also was ferrying 45 cases of cigarettes. They were bound for Barangay Sinunuc from Maluso, Basilan.
The operatives together with the agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) conducted visual inspection and paneling on the seized items for possible presence of drugs.
Climaco said the security sector is exerting efforts to sustain anti-crime and anti-terrorism campaigns to keep the City and its people safe and protected.
She assured that the city government will continue its support and assistance to the security sector so that the maximum results are obtained. #
