Lorenzana: No US plan to launch air strikes in Marawi

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana dismissed the recent NBC News report that the Pentagon is planning to launch air strikes against Isis targets in Marawi City, and tagged the report as “fake news.

“I checked with the US Embassy. They have no idea what it’s all about. I checked with the Pentagon. The Pentagon said it’s not true. It’s a fake news,” Lorenzana said during the House of Representatives’ deliberation on the Department of National Defense Budget, as quoted in online news reports.

But Bagong Alyansang Makabayan Secretary General Renato Reyes said it would not come as a surprise if the Philippines were also considered by the United States for air strikes.

“The US Special Operations Command places the Philippines in the company of Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Libya, Somalia and Yemen as priority areas for military intervention. The US had previously conducted drone strikes in all these other countries. No surprise then that after making the list, the Philippines is now being considered for US airstrikes too,” said Reyes.
