Davao Mayor Sara Duterte could not bear to face the families of the 38 killed in a fire that engulfed a local mall, so she asked the help of her father, President Rodrigo Duterte.
The President revealed Wednesday (December 27) that his daughter “begged off” from meeting with the kin of the victims and asked him to take her place.
“I stood until morning time in just one place because my daughter begged off, si Inday Sara to make the announcement na hindi daw niya— Sabi niya, ‘Pa, hindi ko kaya,’” he said in a briefing with the National Risk Reduction and Management Council in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.
“Sabi ko, ‘Well, I have been mayor for so long a time and I am not new to this kind of situations where you have to break the news,’” he continued. “I dread it every time I do it but you just have to tell them the truth.”
Fire hit the NCCC mall on the morning of Christmas eve, killing 38 – many of whom were call center agents who were trapped in the burning establishment.
