The Sandiganbayan 6th Division has upheld the conviction of former Misamis Occidental governor Loreto Leo Ocampos over the anomalous marine wildlife project with an Iranian-American.
The anti-graft court has issued a resolution which turned down the motion for reconsideration of Ocampos to reverse its verdict which found him and his co-accused Iranian-American Foad Akhavan guilty of graft
“No compelling reason can persuade this Court to rule otherwise. After all, the presence of the elements of the crime has been proven after a full-blown trial on the merits,” the court ruled.
With this, the court affirmed its ruling which sentenced them to imprisonment ranging from six to 10 years.
Ocampos was also meted with perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
The case stemmed from the build-operate-transfer (BOT) Ocampos entered with Akhavan for the Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park (MOAP).
“The project was immediately awarded to the Mr. Akhavan without delay and without any rival proponents, when it was not qualified to participate in the first place,” read the court decision.
