Two top local officials from General Santos City have no problem with the potential extension of martial law in Mindanao.
Mayor Ronnel Rivera, in a Brigada News FM GenSan report Thursday (July 13), said that he’ll approve of an extension for as long as the crisis persists in Marawi City in the province of Lanao del Sur.
It can be recalled that President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law over the entire Mindanao region after Maute terrorists marched into Marawi last May 23. Maute has links with the Islamic extremist group ISIS.
For her part, City Councilor Rosalita Nuñez reckoned that the continued implementation of military rule in the far south is favorable given that the people’s security awareness against terrorism is high.
Nuñez also claimed that there have been no recorded human rights abuses under the current set up, and that opposition politikos remain free to criticize the government.
