Chickens in Davao City are to be tested for symptoms of avian flu, the Department of Agriculture in Region 11 said.
Avian Influenza Protection Program Task Force spokesman and veterinarian Dannie Apelo said tests are scheduled Aug. 24 and 30, and Sept. 4.
“We already have a bird flu task force here in Region 11 and it has been activated. It is composed of the Department of Agriculture Field Office, Department of Health, Local Government Units, and other line agencies including the armed forces and the police for enforcement of regulation,” he said .
He said a serological surveillance will be held in Barangay Talomo in Calinan; and another in Tugbok. These areas have the most poultry farms in the city.
During the test, DA teams will collect blood samples and oral swabs of birds for lab tests.
Apelo added they monitor the entry of migratory birds to the country in September and their exit in March by collecting blood and swab samples.
Meanwhile, Apelo said the veterinary quarantine service office has been alerted for possible entry of birds smuggled from potentially affected regions.
