President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar to run after smuggling, which remains prevalent in this city.
Salazar bared the President’s order on Monday, adding it was made during the President’s recent visit in this city.
Duterte was in the city on November 26 to award medals to the soldiers wounded in the recent clashes with Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu.
“The instruction of President Duterte given me is to arrest them (smugglers),” Salazar said.
She said the President also reminded the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and all concerned agencies that “we are under martial law and as local chief executive, we are clothed with authority to implement anti-smuggling campaign.”
The mayor conceded that smuggling remains a problem in the city, adding that among the goods that are being smuggled into this city included rice and sugar based on apprehensions made by the local police. (PNA)
