President Rodrigo Duterte has lamented the death of his former co-biker and his wife after they were infected with coronavirus disease.
“Mayroon kaming kaibigan sa Davao na kasama namin sa big bike. And this guy is so professional, they have every group that would want to tour the Philippines by big bike sumasama talaga ito siya. Mine, I toured the Philippines almost — ewan ko mga 10 years ago o mas bata pa. And for me, he was really a known person sa bikers’ world,” Duterte said during his taped televised message Wednesday, December 16.
He said his friend was first infected by the virus prior to his wife.
“So ‘yung the penchant of a person to procrastinate — procrastinate is putting it off to another day what should be done today. Ayan bukas na lang, bukas na lang, o maghanap ako ng panahon. Ganun ang nangyari. So he got infected and dinala siya sa hospital. I think as usual parang na-coma. Ang problema ‘yung asawa niya two days after, also got the COVID. So dinala rin sa hospital. Ang asawa niya na nahuli na infected, died. Siya doon sa ICU, one day after, also died,” he said.
The President said the couple did not know of the death of either of them.
“Namatay sila hindi nila alam. Eh tinamaan sila ng Covid eh medyo may edad na ‘yon si Boy. Kung tawagin ko lang ‘Boy’. Iyong ang nangyari. So na-double whammy. And because I know the family, I — ang sama talaga ng loob ko, sabi ko isabi ko ito,” he added.
Duterte reiterated his call to the public to be cautious and follow the health protocols to avoid Covid-19 infection.
“So huwag kayong magkumpiyansa. Sinabi ko sa inyo this is a very lethal thing,” he said.
As of December 17, the Department of Health reported a total of 454,447 Covid-19 cases in the country. Of the total cases, 419,902 have recovered while 8,850 have died.
