DA issues guidelines on bird shipments from Mindanao, Visayas

Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said he would step down from office if the Avian Flu virus reached Mindanao and Visayas.

In a press conference, Piñol said the Department of Agriculture would not allow the shipment of all live domestic birds including poultry meat, eggs, chicks and manure from Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao to prevent the spread of the virus.

However, he said the DA would still allow the shipment of live domestic birds and products from Visayas and Mindanao to Luzon, provided that the shipments will be accompanied by a permit and a veterinarian.

The Bureau of Animal Industry recently confirmed the existence of an H5 strain Avian flu virus in a farm in San Luis, Pampanga, which could affect around 400,000 chickens.
