A policeman and a suspect were killed in a shootout in Cagayan de Oro City, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Friday.
SPO1 Sergs de Constantine Maceren, a member of the Special Operations Team of Regional Highway Patrol Unit-10, died from a gunshot wound in his chest from an M4 assault carbine fired by the driver of a car whom he accosted along Masterson Avenue in Upper Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City Wednesday, December 5.
SPO2 Lyndie Baltazar, who was with Maceren, was also wounded in the incident and is being treated at a local hospital.
The driver of the car, who was identified as Abdulrahim Batawi Adilao of Mabalacat, Pampanga, was hit when the lawmen returned fire. He later expired.
PNP-HPG Director Chief Superintendent Roberto Fajardo said that a deeper investigation is ongoing to verify if Adilao was related to two motorists who were arrested two days prior to the shootout.
He said that Maceren filed criminal complaints for violation of Article 212 of the Revised Penal Code for Corruption of Public Official against a certain Gary Sabrido Ranalan of Brgy. Lumbia and Franklin Jhon Cabural Ramos of Brgy. Kauswagan, both in Cagayan de Oro.
Both Ranalan and Ramos allegedly offered bribe to Maceren for the release of their respective vehicles that were impounded for delinquent registration and unauthorized plate.
Fajardo said that Adilao’s firearm and car have been submitted to the Crime Laboratory for forensic examination.
He said that Maceren will be accorded appropriate funeral honors and assistance has been provided to the HPG trooper’s orphaned family.
