BUTUAN CITY— The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued 236 individuals December 20 from a fast craft that ran aground at sea while on the way to Siargao Island.

PCG commander Lawrence Roque said no passenger or crew member of M/V Fortune Angel 2 was hurt in the incident.

Roque said the PCG’s initial investigation showed the fast craft ran aground minutes after it left the Surigao City Wharf. He said water started to enter the vessel’s interior after its propeller shaft was damaged.

“Strong sea current off coast between mainland island of Surigao and Siargao caused the fastcraft to swerve to shallow portion of the sea that caused it to run aground. Luckily there were no strong waves” Roque told Politiko.

He said PCG personnel promptly rescued the passengers and crew members of M/V Fortune Angel after receiving its distress call.
