Climaco wants 2 naval officers reprimanded for destroying corals

Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco is screaming for the head of two Philippine Navy (PN) officers after their patrol ship damaged protected coral reefs off Sta. Cruz Island last weekend.

In a Manila Bulletin online report dated May 6, the naval craft was identified as the BRP Tausug, allegedly commanded by one Lt. Darwin Guilliarte and a certain Melad.

The ship was loaded with beachgoers when it dropped anchor off the Sta. Cruz Island coral sanctuary, damaging some 100 square feet of coral.

Sta. Cruz Island Protected Area Management Unit biologists and representatives claimed the PN officers were arrogant when they were told not to drop anchor in the area to preserve the underwater marine resources.

The lady politiko formally brought the matter to the attention to ranking naval officials in the region and said the incident was a clear violation of the Republic Act 7586 otherwise known as the National Integrated Protected Areas System Act of 1992.
