Cagayan de Oro Vice Governor Joey Pelaez on Wednesday sought help from Senator Miguel Zubiri to lobby for the continuation of operation of the Bukidnon State University-External Studies Centers in Misamis Oriental province.
According to Pelaez’s Facebook page, Senator Zubiri assured him that he will write an appeal to the Commission of Higher Education (Ched) and other senators to take up the issue of the extension centers during the deliberation of the Ched budget.
In 2014, the Ched made a decision to close some of the satellite learning centers for violating Ched standards.
The Commission found out that the centers lack full-time faculty members and journals, have very limited facilities, outdated books and computers outsourced from a private company.
The centers’ closure will affect some 5,000 students in Misamis Oriental.
Last August, the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education, chaired by Zamboanga Sibugay Rep. Ann Hofer, approved a motion calling on the Ched to stop its plan to abolish the schools, which help poor students acquire a college education.
A House probe has been set to determine the effects of the Ched’s order to close down some of the extension centers in Misamis Oriental.
