The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), in partnership with the Marine Battalion Landing Team-3, deployed and installed artificial reefs off Sulu.
Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega said the artificial reefs were placed in the waters of Barangays Kansipat and Seit Higad in Panamao town.
“Aside from the conduct of focused military operations against the Abu Sayyaf, our troops in Sulu will continue to support the implementation of the various activities in coordination with other line agencies that will aid in the socio-economic advancement in the province,” he said.
The placing of artificial reefs is one of the measures to preserve and protect marine life and provide a safe haven for fishes in the coastline of Panamao, Sulu, Westmincom said.
It noted that fishing is the basic source of income of the residents in the said municipality and “this undertaking would greatly help the local fishermen to sustain their livelihood.”
