The Davao City Council has declared Senator Antonio Trillanes IV as persona non grata over his comment that the city had the highest murder rate in the country.
The declaration was made Tuesday (February 12) during a regular session of the council following the privilege speech of Vice Mayor Bernard Al-ag.
As persona non grata, Trillanes will not be welcome in Davao City.
In his speech, Al-ag slammed Trillanes’ remark as “fake news” even though its basis was the Philippine National Police’s data for 2015.
“Declaring that my City is the most dangerous city in the Philippines is not acceptable! This is an insult to the 1.6 million Dabawenyos who are working hard everyday to make our city safe,” he said.
The vice mayor noted that Davao City was the recipient of the Seal of Good Local Governance in 2011 and 2015 from then -Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.
Al-ag challenged the Filipinos who attended a forum in Chicago where Trillanes made the comment about Davao being the most dangerous city in the world to come to President Rodrigo Duterte’s turf.
If something bad happens to them, the vice mayor said he will shoulder their fare going back to Chicago and give them pocket money.
Al-ag, who succeeded Paolo Duterte as vice mayor following his resignation last December, said Trillanes will not succeed in destroying Davao City’s reputation, as well as the President’s.
“Mr. Trillanes, we do not need you here in Davao City. You are unwelcome and unwanted in our city of Davao. You have not done anything good at all to our city,” he said.
