After Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio asked opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to leave her alone, here comes her brother, Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, threatening to file libel charges against the same lawmaker.
According to Paolo, former Davao City vice mayor, he will file criminal and administrative complaints against Trillanes for allegedly maligning his reputation and integrity after he was “maliciously” implicated in the P6.4 billion worth of smuggled shabu from China in May last year.
“Senator Trillanes manufactured lies and deliberately spread these lies with the obvious intention of destroying my name and maligning my reputation, with a view to impacting negatively against our beloved President,” President Rodrigo Duterte’s eldest son said in a statement.
He said Trillanes was not immune from suit when he dragged his name into the smuggling issue.
“The Senator was apparently emboldened by his false reliance on and abuse of his parliamentary immunity. But this immunity does not apply to libelous remarks made during media interviews, clearly as these attacks were done outside the halls of the Senate — and definitely not when these were discharged with the pure intention of destroying me,” he said.
During the Senate inquiry last year on the P6.4-billion drug haul from China, Trillanes accused Paolo of being a member of a triad or international crime syndicate as this could be proven by a “colored and dragon-like” tattoo on his back.
But Paolo refused to show his back by invoking his right to privacy.
Paolo’s statement that he will file complaints against Trillanes came a day after Duterte-Carpio warned Trillanes that she would make his life miserable if he would not leave her alone.
The presidential daughter became irked of the opposition senator after claiming that Duterte has been grooming her for the 2022 presidential elections in order for him to remain in power.
