The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has installed newly-promoted Lt. Gen. Arnel dela Vega as the new Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) commander.
Dela Vega formally assumed the post on Wednesday during a ceremony held at the military headquarters in Zamboanga City.
He replaced Gen. Carlito Galvez who was appointed as the AFP chief of staff last April.
Dela Vega promised to boost the campaign against the proliferation of loose firearms in Western Mindanao, saying “this is one vital factor why terrorism, illegal drugs, rido and common crimes, at the very least, continue to persist.”
With the imposition of martial law in Mindanao, he also assured the military’s commitment to human rights.
Prior to his new post, Dela Vega was the commander of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division.
