Totoo ang narcopolitiko! Palace: Sarangani mayor’s arrest show drug trade affects local politics
The surrender of Maasim, Sarangani Mayor Aniceto Lopez Jr. after Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) operatives found illegal drugs in his home underscores how deeply entrenched narco-politics is in the country, Malacañang said Saturday (October 7).
In a statement, presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said the PDEA’s raid “proves the administration’s claim that illegal drugs and corruption have captured local politics.”
He then called on the public to continue supporting the government’s campaign in eliminating illegal drugs.
“Progress against illegal drugs largely depends on the full support and cooperation of everyone from the citizens to the church and communities,” Abella said.
Lopez surrendered to Senator Manny Pacquiao at his mansion in General Santos City Friday (October 6), hours after PDEA operatives raided his home in Sarangani and found drugs and other drug-making paraphernalia.
Pacquiao supported Lopez’s political comeback in 2013.
