Soldiers seize sniper rifle, other guns from fugitive Maguindanao narco-mayor Sabal
Government security forces have recovered high-powered firearms that belong to a dismissed town mayor linked to illegal drug operations in Maguindanao, military officials said Tuesday.
Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr., Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief, said the firearms were recovered at around 11:30 a.m. Monday in Barangay Montay, Datu Piang, Maguindanao.
Galvez said among those recovered were a homemade caliber .50 Barret sniper rifle, a Rocket Propelled Grenade launcher and a tripod for caliber .30 machine gun.
Galvez said the recovered firearms belong to Montasir Sabal, the former mayor of Talitay, Maguindanao.
The Office of the Ombudsman dismissed Sabal in August this year for the misdeclaration of Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN).
Sabal was also allegedly involved in large-scale drug trafficking.
Sabal remains to be at large after he eluded arrest.
Maj. Gen. Arnel Delavega, Joint Task Force Central commander, said the firearms were recovered when they conducted operation in response to the information received that there were firearms and ammunition submerged in the water near the known armory of the former town mayor.
He added that they are working in close coordination with the police to sustain the campaign against illegal drugs and other forms of criminality.
“Combat and intelligence operations are continuously being intensified in our serious efforts to defeat the terrorists who conduct nefarious activities in Central Mindanao,” Galvez said. (PNA)
