Seventy ARMM college students to enter DOST scholarship programs; Nagqualify eh
At least 70 third-year college students from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao passed the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) examination for the Department of Science and Technology’s Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) scholarship.
The ARMM said this is the highest number of qualifiers in science scholarship programs in the region for this year, and is three times compared to last year’s 24.
“The increasing number of passers can be attributed to the region’s ‘Syensiya-bilidad’ program,” Science and Technology (S&T) ARMM Secretary Myra Mangkabung said (https://armm.gov.ph/70-armm-college-students-qualify-dost-seis-scholarship-programs/).
Qualifiers of the DOST scholarship programs will avail of two- to three-year S&T scholarships. The new JLSS scholars will receive their scholarship incentives effective first semester of 2018.
Mangkabung said the “Syensiya-bilidad” initiative sought to develop the skills of the students who would be taking the examinations.
“Syensiya-bilidad” includes a two-day comprehensive review focusing on Intellective Speed and Intellective Power.
Before this, the DOST-ARMM administered a free online review and pre-test for students in the five provinces of the region.
Now, it also conducts an intensive information drive dubbed “Push 4 Science” to raise awareness about DOST-SEI’s scholarship programs.
Mangkabung said the ARMM also increased the number of testing centers in the region.
DOST scholars are entitled to subsidy in tuition and other school fees, monthly living allowance, and book allowance in the last two or three years of their undergraduate studies.
Those who qualify under the Merit Scholarship Program will receive the same benefits except for the pro-rated monthly stipend, based on the scholar’s socio-economic status.
However, the scholars are required to render service to the country, preferably in their home region, for a period equivalent to the number of years they availed of the scholarship.
RA 7687 and Merit scholars are to work on their fields of specialization while those under RA 10612 will serve as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics teachers in any public, or private high school in the country.
They may teach even without the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) eligibility but they have to pass the LET within five years from the date of hiring.
