Out kayo rito! Negros mayor orders boycott of Coke products at town fiesta
Soft drink giant Coca-Cola and its products will be out of the picture at the annual fiesta of Hinigaran town in Negros Occidental from April 20 to 30.
Hinigaran Mayor Jose Nadie Arceo said this is in line with the sugar industry’s call to boycott Coke products for using high fructose corn syrup instead of local sugar.
“We will not allow the sale of Coke products at the town’s public plaza during the Hinugyaw sa Hinigaran,” Arceo said.
Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. similarly banned Coke sponsorship and sale at the “Panaad sa Negros” Festival in Barangay Mansilingan in Bacolod City in April.
In March, more than 5,000 stakeholders of the Philippine sugar industry sought a boycott of Coke products due to its choice not to use locally produced sugar.
Negros island is a major producer of sugar in the country.
