Alvarez on 24 uncooperative lawmakers who lost ‘pork’: ‘You win some, you lose some’
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez confirmed reports that 24 uncooperative lawmakers lost their infrastructure projects at the last minute during the bicameral discussions before the final P3.767-trillion budget was signed on Tuesday.
In a report on inquirer.net, Alvarez was quoted as saying,“You win some you lose some. They should understand that you can’t have your cake and eat it too.”
Alvarez said the removal of the funds for the 24 lawmakers was “a question of leadership.” “I have to take care of my members,” he said.
Alvarez said it was unfair to cooperative House members to give equal funding to their colleagues who did not show the same level of cooperation.
Based on earlier news reports, the 24 House members who lost infrastructure funds for their districts or constituencies included members of the Magnificent 7 and Makabayan, as well as some Liberal Party members allied with the majority coalition.
Alvarez said the affected constituents of the 24 should talk to their representatives so they could have their funds back.
The deleted infrastructure projects were already approved on third reading but realigned during the negotiations in the bicameral conference committee between the Senate and House contingents.
The General Appropriations Act of 2018 was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday.
